• 18 years old or above
• completed 12 years of school education or equivalent
• has Japanese ability appropriate to the admission period
• April entrants: 150+ hours of Japanese study history or JLPT N5-equivalent ability
• October entrants: JLPT N4-equivalent ability
• permitted or expected to be permitted to enter Japan through proper procedures
• applicant or financial supporter/parents can pay tuition and living expenses during stay
• no health or mental illness issues that would prevent continued study
