Hi everyone, I’m planning on moving to Japan in 2027 for about a year, maybe a year and a half. I will be applying to a language school and I wanted to know if roughly 6 months will be enough to submit my visa application and prepare? I will be taking the JLPT exam in July, and from what I know the results should be out by September. Is this early enough to enrol for a semester in April?

it will be enough time but popular schools fill up fast. the earlier you contact these schools, the better.

Your school will handle the visa procedure (until you receive the CoE, at which point you take it to your embassy/consulate). Just make sure you meet the application deadline for the school. Check the school’s website for the date.

It might be a good idea to start the application early even without JLPT. This way you will reserve your spot at the school. The school should be flexible with allowing you to upload the certificate later.
Good luck with the exam!

Staff from a language school here! It really depends on the school you plan to apply to. However, if we are talking only about the student visa process itself, then 6-7 months is generally enough time to complete it.
That said, you first need to apply for the course, and application timelines vary depending on the school. Some schools may allow enough flexibility for you to apply, complete the visa process, and move within 6 months, while others have stricter application deadlines, meaning you would need to start the process earlier.
The same applies to the JLPT certificate. Each school follows different schedules based on the deadlines set by immigration for the April intake. Some schools may accept the JLPT certificate after you receive the results in September, while others may require it earlier because their visa application process begins sooner. There are also schools that require you to submit the certificate at the time you apply for the course, meaning you would already need to have it prepared.
I would recommend contacting the school as soon as possible to confirm their specific deadlines and document requirements. Applications for the April intake have already started, or will start very soon at many schools, so it is best to begin the process early.
